If I were young, I'd flee this town

Paris & Sophie Calle @Bibliothèque Nationale de France

I'm still playing catchup with my blog posts but want to cover allparts of the trip where possible. I arrived in Paris from LeHavre. I met up with Daniel and Sascha and we set about taking the city by storm! :)

We mooched about the city with no real agenda, or alteast no agenda I'm willing to describe in details. I'll let Saschas pictures speak for themselves ;)

We visited the catacombs which was not really too exciting. But an potentially an interesting place depending on your interests. Its hard not to meditate on death whilst down there in the dank dark tunnels beneath les trotoirs de Paris.

I can't remember which night it was but on one of the evenings we went to the Buddha Bar. A really cool place, although it could be any bar anywhere in the world, the music was oppressively loud (yep, I'm getting old) but the decor was slick. The prices obviously meant that it was a bar for tourists or the affluent( 36yoyos for 2 beers and a cocktail).

I love Paris, I always have and always will. One of the highlights of the weekend was a Sophie Calle exhibition I caught in the BnP. I'd seen some of her work in the Dublin MoMA about 5-6 years ago and it had left a lasting impression on me. The exhibition was based on her life( as is usual for her). Specifically about the breakup between her and an ex boyfriend. He had chosen to breakup over email and in turn she responded by forwarding the email to some friends to give their opinions. The exhibition itself contained the responses from her various friends. Responses included such media as photos of their pets eating the email(in printed form of course), friends singing the words of the letter, video footage of them acting out the rage she herself must have felt. It was a pretty straightforward show which encouraged deeper thought. I loved it!

The hall in which the exhibit was being held was a sight to behold in itself( a part of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France). Almost overbearing given the subject matter . But it was a great opportunity to see the space too. I have a copy of the letter if anyone ever wants to see it. (i.e. I'll try to put a copy up online).

In summary the trip to Paris was a casual one. I also had the chance to meet up with Martin(on of my house mates from London) who was coincidentally visiting his girlfriend at the same time. We went for a meal and hung out a little. It was a fine evening and he looked in fine form from his travels( he too is traveling the globe at the moment). I recall seeing a glint in his eye that I was slightly envious of, the shine of a person who is truly content. Little did I realise that travel was the elixir that was fueling this fine state ( And soon I too was about to be quaffing it by the jugfull.)

So thats it - my trip to Paris in a nutshell.

Le Havre and me!

Le Havre

I arrived in Le havre after a particularly easy crossing from Portsmouth. My bed for the night was a reclining chair which to my surprise was amazingly comfortable. I strongly recommend the journey for anyone looking for a reasonable way to get from England to France. Add to that the fact that Le Havre is obscenely close to a place called Etretat and you have the makings of a very pleasant mini break in France.

You'll have to excuse me but those chair beds were so comfortable I think its worthy of adding a pic -

Anyway, my bed fellow for the evening was an old gent who kept himself to himself, but unashamedly touted the merits of hot chocolate. so much so in fact that when i went to get my own night cap I passed over the bottled over priced beer and went straight for some of that luscious chocolat chaud too.

The rest of my time in Le Havre was spent in the company of my very gracious host Aisling. I was great to see her again and see her beautiful home. Although now that I mention it, I realise that have no pics of her home to share. Whilst in leHavre Ais brought me to Etretat.( is it annoying you that there is no accent on the E? because its annoying the hell out of me. But this eeepc has its limitations and facilitating extended characters from the keyboard is one of them.) Anyway.....Etretat is simply beautiful and I reckon it is as important to visit it in person as it is to see the Mona Lisa in person. Sometime we put so much emphasis on art when the art in life is so much better. But I digress...

On the Friday we dropped by a tattoo parlour where I decided to have myself inked once again. This time getting the (long desired) image of kokopelli( that's Ko-Ko-Pelli not kokopeepee!!) needled into my calf. The process took 2 hours and it was only towards the end that my patience waned and therefore my tolerance of the needle too. The results are perfect and I'm delighted to have a new amigo with me for company on my travels.

Say hi to my liddle friend -

I was really great starting the trip in LeHavre and it was also great catching up with Ais & Dams again. I look forward to showing them similar hospitality when my very own home exists.

Follow the dotted line..

..3 steps later and I'm finally on my way.[London -> France -> Germany] It wasn't until I was chatting with the taxi driver on my way to Portsmouth harbour that the first taste of - "hmmm this *is* going to be cool really kicked in. Obviously over the last 10 days I've had this feeling repeat on me like a banana milkshake. I'm learning to savour it like a fine wine as opposed to the debase enjoyment of a particularly smelly fart.

As I'm filling this blog out retrospectively its probably best to take my time and give each place its own entry. Firstly because that gives me further leave to drag the writing out and secondly its more likely that people will read it.

So to start at the beginning, here's a wee map of my travels so far - for those of you who like colours!!

And for convenience I'll link to each location blog entry in case you arrive here and want to read them in a row.

grey skies are gonna clear up, put on a happy face..

Not that the weather has been bad since I came back to Ireland. Today is the first day since I left London that I've felt the clouds of discontent shift. Possibly thanks to the fact that I've not given myself a hangover in 2 days (goodbye-drinks are the spawn of Satan). Quite definitely due to the fact that I've undergone a new mood enhancement treatment called Trampoline therapy. (see image below..)

It has been many moons since I have belly-laughed so hard. Between the discovery of the yogi boing( photos to be posted at a later stage) and the sheer pleasure of propelling my niece into the air like a little humanoid tiddley-wink, it is hard to engage in such an activity and not be grinning ear to ear afterwards.

The experience has put working with these folk even higher on my list of things to do before I die become dull. There is so much to be said about the nofitstate Circus that I think I'll commit a post to them at a later stage. Needless to say that in my 29th year I rediscovered my desire to run away with the circus. Or atleast work with them long enough to develop my own piece, thing or trick!

So yes, today has certainly taken on a brighter hue. As I see the sun outside and hear the birds a chirp-chirpin in the trees I'm pretty sure that I'll be feeling more like this by the end of the day.-

A quote that resonates with me today - “Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world."
